Warri Wolves — Rangers: the champions are chasing their first win
The second round of the Nigerian Premier Football League brings an interesting clash between Warri Wolves and Rangers International.

Warri Wolves did not enjoy the best possible start to the season. In the opening round, the team travelled to Benin City and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bendel Insurance. Wolves did manage to score, but defensive problems prevented them from securing even a point. After the first round, the team sit 16th with zero points.
Now they face a much tougher test. The reigning Nigerian champions — Rangers from Enugu — are set to visit. Fidelis Ilechukwu's side began their title defence with a 1-1 draw against Katsina United. In fact, the champions came close to losing: their opponents opened the scoring before half-time, and only a goal from Chibuze Oputa in the seventh minute of added time saved Rangers from a home defeat.
So both sides currently have one point? No — there is an important difference here: Warri Wolves began the championship with a defeat, while Rangers picked up one point. For the reigning champions, this is clearly not the result they were hoping for, so the visitors will surely be looking to make amends in the second round.
In terms of style, the two teams could produce a closely contested game. Under Hassan Abdallahi, Warri Wolves rely on quick transitions and exploiting space. Rangers, meanwhile, have greater experience and should look to control the flow of the match. At the same time, the champions will need to avoid repeating the mistakes from the opening round and give their opponents no opportunity to score late.
It is also worth recalling their most recent head-to-head meeting. In January this year, Rangers put on a real goal-scoring spectacle, beating Warri Wolves 4-2. The hosts will now surely be hoping to play in a much more organised manner and make the most of their home advantage.
On paper, Rangers have the edge. They are the reigning champions, have more experience and are competing with greater ambitions. But after losing their opening match, Warri Wolves will certainly not be willing to give up points without a fight.
