England, Ipswich, Portman Road

The third-round Premier League match between Ipswich Town and Liverpool will take place on 4 September at Portman Road. The hosts have collected three points from two matches, while the Merseysiders have drawn twice and are still without a win in the new Premier League season.

Ipswich Town: much more convincing at home

Gary O'Neil's side began the league campaign with a 2-1 home victory over Sunderland before suffering a heavy 5-2 defeat to Manchester United. Ipswich actually opened the scoring at Old Trafford through Leif Davis, but were unable to cope with the pressure after the break.

The Premier League newcomers have looked far more convincing on their own ground. In addition to beating Sunderland, they defeated Leicester 3-1 here in the League Cup, so Liverpool should not expect an easy trip.

Liverpool: two draws and growing pressure after winless start

Andoni Iraola's side began the league campaign with two identical 2-2 draws, against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. In the previous round, the Merseysiders came from behind twice, with a late goal from Victor Muñoz helping them avoid their first defeat.

The signing of Bradley Barcola from PSG provides an additional boost, although the Frenchman is likely to start on the bench. Alexander Isak is expected to lead the attack, supported by Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz and Muñoz.

Match facts and head-to-head record

  • Ipswich have won both of their competitive home matches this season.
  • Both of Liverpool's opening Premier League matches have ended 2-2.
  • The Merseysiders have already conceded four goals in two league matches.

The visitors' quality should finally deliver a result: Ipswich Town vs Liverpool prediction

Ipswich are capable of causing problems at home and have already shown that they are not afraid to play boldly against stronger opponents. However, conceding five goals to Manchester United highlighted their vulnerability when the tempo rises.

Liverpool are still far from convincing defensively, so an away clean sheet looks unlikely. However, Iraola's side have a clear advantage in attacking quality and individual ability and should finally secure their first win of the season.
