The Champions League debutants head to Old Trafford: Manchester United vs Sabah prediction
Sabah FK
The opening-round Champions League match between Manchester United and Sabah will take place on 10 September at Old Trafford. The English club return to the competition after a three-year absence, while the Azerbaijani champions will play in the main stage of the Champions League for the first time.
Manchester United: imperfect start and focus on home advantage
Michael Carrick's side have collected four points from three Premier League matches and drew 2-2 with Everton in their latest game. The start to the season has been inconsistent so far, while the defence continue to give opponents opportunities.
With the derby against Manchester City coming up, the coaching staff may rotate the squad. Leny Yoro, Andrey Santos and Benjamin Šeško could all be given a chance from the start, with Šeško having scored after coming off the bench in the previous round.
Sabah: eight qualifying matches and a powerful start to the season
Sabah came through a long qualifying campaign, eliminating TNS, KuPS, Aarhus and Hapoel Be'er Sheva in succession. The Azerbaijani side won six of their eight qualifying matches and kept four clean sheets.
Sabah have also made a perfect start to their domestic league campaign, collecting nine points from three matches. Before travelling to Manchester, they thrashed Zira 5-0.
Match facts and head-to-head record
- Manchester United are playing their first Champions League campaign in three seasons.
- Sabah have won six of their eight qualifying matches in this season's competition.
- Joy-Lance Mickels has registered nine goal contributions in 11 matches this season.
The hosts should take all three points, but not with a clean sheet: Manchester United vs Sabah prediction
Sabah are in good rhythm and have already proved their quality during qualifying. Given the hosts' current defensive problems, the debutants are quite capable of creating several dangerous situations and scoring.
However, the gap in individual quality remains too significant. Even with rotation, Manchester United should control most of the match and create enough chances to secure a convincing victory.
