Sweden vs Czechia: prediction, betting tips, facts and H2H – May 18, 2026
Sweden
Czechia
Sweden will face Czechia in the group stage of the 2026 IIHF World Championship. The matchup takes place on Monday, May 18, with puck drop scheduled for 20:20 CET. Here is my betting pick for this encounter.
Sweden vs Czechia: match preview
Sweden have brought a very strong roster to this World Championship and are clearly among the leading contenders for gold. The squad features ten NHL players, including Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Simon Holmström, Lucas Raymond and several other standout names.
It has been a long time since Tre Kronor last lifted the World Championship trophy, and they will be desperate to end that drought. Their campaign began with a tough test against Canada, where they fell 5–3. However, with plenty of hockey still to be played, there is more than enough time to recover and build momentum.
Czechia only managed to reclaim World Championship glory in 2024, winning the title on home ice. This time, however, they have not arrived with a star-studded roster. The coaching staff have largely placed their trust in domestic talent. The team features just four NHL players, while 19 members of the squad come from the Czech domestic league.
That makes it difficult to view Czechia as one of the tournament’s primary title favourites. They opened the tournament with a convincing 4–1 victory over Denmark, but followed it up with a surprising 3–2 overtime defeat to Slovenia — a result that can certainly be considered one of the early shocks of the competition.
Match facts and H2H
- Sweden have lost three of their last four matches.
- Czechia have also lost three of their previous four games.
- In the most recent meeting between these teams, Czechia defeated Sweden 3–1.
Prediction
A thrilling contest is in store, but I believe Sweden will come out on top. They simply possess the stronger and more star-studded roster, which should prove decisive in this matchup.
