USA, Seattle, Lumen Field

On the night of October 2, Seattle Sounders will host Sporting Kansas City in an MLS regular-season match. In Seattle itself, the game will take place on the evening of October 1 at Lumen Field. For the hosts, this is an important clash in the race for a playoff spot, while Sporting enter the match near the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

Seattle are gradually emerging from a difficult spell of the season. After a run of three consecutive draws, the team produced back-to-back wins, first beating Real Salt Lake 2-0 at home and then overcoming Minnesota 3-1. The Sounders have scored nine goals in their last four matches, so they have clearly found their rhythm in attack.

However, the situation in the standings is still far from perfect. Heading into this game, Seattle have 35 points from 26 matches and sit ninth in the West. That means every upcoming victory is especially important, with the playoff race incredibly tight.
One of the hosts' main creative forces remains Albert Rusnák. The Slovakian midfielder has already recorded 16 goal contributions in the league — four goals and 12 assists. Paul Rothrock has also been in good form, with five goals to his name. After returning to the lineup, Danny Musovski immediately made his presence felt as well, scoring against Real Salt Lake.

There is also good news for the defense. Yeimar Gómez Andrade returned to the field after a lengthy absence, coming on as a substitute in the recent match. His return is particularly important at the business end of the regular season, when defensive solidity becomes no less crucial than attacking output.

Sporting Kansas City, meanwhile, are having a much tougher season. The team sit 15th in the West with 21 points from 26 games. Still, immediately before their trip to Seattle, Sporting finally secured a victory — a 2-0 win over Houston Dynamo. What is more, it was the team's first clean sheet of the season.

Before that, Sporting's defense had looked extremely vulnerable. The team have conceded 63 goals, one of the worst records in the league. The match against Philadelphia was particularly telling: Kansas City led 3-0 but somehow ended up losing 4-3. Even so, the win over Houston could provide the emotional boost the visitors need to put together a more confident run.

In attack, André Luís is currently the player to watch. The Brazilian joined the team in the summer and adapted quickly, scoring four goals and providing one assist in just over 300 minutes on the pitch. Calvin Harris has also scored four league goals, complemented by six assists.

Interestingly, the first meeting between these teams this season ended in a 1-1 draw. The match in Kansas City took place on May 2: Seattle opened the scoring early through Paul Rothrock, but former Sporting player Dejan Joveljić leveled the score. The Serbian now represents the Sounders, but due to the international window, he will be unavailable for his new team in this match.

The team news is certainly worth noting. Seattle will be without Joveljić and Snyder Brunell, who have joined their national teams, while Hassani Dotson will miss the game through suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards. Sporting also have absentees, including Rubén Ramos Jr., who has been called up to the United States U20 national team.

Another intriguing storyline is Stefan Cleveland's return to Seattle. The Sporting goalkeeper spent four seasons with the Sounders and will now play at Lumen Field as a visitor for the first time since leaving the club. In the first meeting with his former team in May, he made seven saves and helped Kansas City earn a point.

On paper, Seattle look the stronger side thanks to home advantage and their current form, but the hosts certainly cannot afford to relax.

Sporting have just ended a run of five consecutive away defeats and kept their first clean sheet of the season. In addition, after beating Houston 2-0, the visitors will surely arrive in Washington with considerably more confidence.

At the same time, the recent record in the northwestern United States is clearly not on Kansas City's side: in their last eight away trips to Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver between 2024 and 2026, Sporting have failed to earn a single point, conceding 24 goals and scoring only four. The team now have a chance to finally change that trend, but doing so against a Seattle side that has found its stride will be no easy task.

My prediction: Seattle to win.
