Schalke — Leipzig: can the hosts from Gelsenkirchen stop the visitors who are hitting their stride?
On October 31, Schalke will host Leipzig in the eighth round of the German Bundesliga. The match will take place at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen and will kick off at 15:30 German time. At first glance, the favorite here is obvious: the visitors sit higher in the table, score far more frequently and come into the match on the back of a convincing victory. However, Schalke are playing at home, and their defense has looked far more reliable this season than anyone might have expected.
Schalke: a reliable defense cannot hide the problems in attack
The return to the top flight has been far from straightforward for the Gelsenkirchen side. After seven rounds, Miron Muslic's team have collected six points and sit in the lower half of the table. The club have scored just four goals — the lowest total among all teams in the championship at the time of writing this preview. At the same time, they have conceded seven, and those numbers suggest that the team's main problem lies not so much in defense as in converting their own chances.
Schalke have not won any of their last three matches. First, they lost 2:1 to Freiburg, conceding the decisive goal in the 85th minute; then they suffered a 1:0 home defeat to Mainz; and in the previous round, they drew 0:0 with Cologne. In their most recent game, the Gelsenkirchen side managed to keep a clean sheet, but they were unable to find a way to score themselves.

Loris Karius deserves special mention. The goalkeeper has repeatedly come to his teammates' rescue and was named the man of the match against Cologne. If the hosts are to hope for points against a stronger opponent, their goalkeeper will once again have to perform almost flawlessly.
In attack, much will depend on how effectively Schalke can use the flanks and set pieces. Robin Gosens is capable of creating danger with his forward runs, while Satoshi Tanaka and Sofian El-Faouzi can help the team battle for control of midfield. Still, organization alone will not be enough: against Leipzig, the hosts must finish more attacks with shots and show greater courage when exploiting open space.
Leipzig: after thrashing Elversberg
the mood is excellent
The visitors approach the game with a completely different mindset. After seven rounds, Martin Demichelis' team have 12 points and sit fifth in the table. Their goals-for-and-against record is 20:11, meaning Leipzig score almost three goals per game on average.
In the previous round, the Bulls comfortably dispatched Elversberg 4:0. However, the scoreline should not be misleading: the first half ended goalless, while the hosts made the most of their superiority after the break. Tidiam Gomis opened the scoring in the 48th minute, Romulo added a brace, and Christoph Baumgartner, returning from injury, completed the scoring.
Antonio Nusa was particularly impressive. He was directly involved in setting up the first two goals and showed just how dangerous Leipzig can be when they are given space to launch quick attacks. Gomis also confirmed that he can capitalize on the opportunities that come his way, while Romulo demonstrated excellent instincts inside the penalty area.
Of course, it should not be forgotten that Leipzig had previously lost 4:1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League. However, the team's response in the following match was convincing. Demichelis made significant changes to the lineup, yet even the reserves helped secure a emphatic victory. That underlines the squad's depth and gives the coach additional options ahead of the trip to Gelsenkirchen.
There is one personnel concern for the visitors, though: Christopher Nkunku missed the game against Elversberg with a groin problem. His availability for the next match will need to be assessed closer to kickoff. Baumgartner, by contrast, has already returned to the pitch and immediately got on the scoresheet.
Head-to-head history and the tactical battle
Historically, the advantage in this matchup belongs to Leipzig. In the last ten Bundesliga meetings listed in the head-to-head statistics, the Bulls have recorded seven wins, drawn once and lost twice. The most recent encounter took place in May 2023 and ended in a 4:2 victory for Leipzig.
But past results do not guarantee a repeat of the same script. The current Schalke side will look to make the game as uncomfortable as possible for the favorites. The hosts must prevent their opponents from building attacks through the middle and avoid leaving space behind the defensive line. If the Gelsenkirchen side can withstand the initial pressure and impose a physical battle, they may have a chance to get something from the match.
Leipzig will likely try to seize the initiative, make active use of the flanks and move the ball quickly into the final third. It will be crucial for the visitors to score first: if they do, the hosts will have to open up, creating exactly the kind of scenario in which the Bulls' attacking line feels most comfortable.
On paper, the visitors look the stronger side. They are significantly more prolific, have a wider range of options in their squad and come into the match after a 4:0 victory. Schalke, meanwhile, have taken just one point from their last three league games and scored only one goal.
Even so, the hosts should not be written off completely. Their defense is capable of holding opponents at bay, while the support of the home crowd could give the team an extra spark. The key question is whether the Gelsenkirchen side can create enough chances to make at least one of them count.
My pick — Leipzig to win.
