Only a few hours remain before the World Cup knockout stage kicks off, and one of the most intriguing Round of 16 clashes will see Germany face Paraguay.

On paper, everything looks rather predictable: the Germans are clear favorites, but the World Cup has repeatedly shown that knockout football punishes even the slightest mistake.

Germany cruised through the group stage, topping Group E. Julian Nagelsmann’s squad secured their playoff berth early with wins over Curaçao and Ivory Coast, but wrapped up the group with a surprise defeat to Ecuador (1-2). That result cooled some of the hype around Die Mannschaft and proved that even one of the tournament’s most talented squads isn’t immune to trouble—especially when the opponent exploits open spaces and capitalizes on defensive lapses.

Paraguay, meanwhile, weren’t among the main contenders for an upset, but they fully earned their place in the knockouts. The South Americans finished third in Group D and advanced thanks to the tournament’s new format. Their strengths are discipline, a compact defense, and the ability to endure long spells without the ball. Teams like this often cause headaches for favorites in do-or-die matches.

Germany’s main hope lies in their attacking line. Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Kai Havertz, and company can break down almost any defense if they find their rhythm. But consistency has been lacking at times: brilliant stretches are sometimes followed by lapses in concentration, as was clear against Ecuador. If the Germans learn from that defeat, Paraguay will have a mountain to climb.
Paraguay also face personnel issues. According to the latest reports, midfielder Diego Gómez will miss the match—a serious blow to the midfield, where the team will already be under heavy pressure.

Overall, the match scenario seems clear: Germany will likely take control of the ball from the opening whistle, while Paraguay will look for their chance through quick counterattacks and set pieces. If the favorites score early, it could turn into a comfortable evening for Nagelsmann’s side. But if the South Americans hold out for at least an hour, German fans are in for a nervy ride.

My prediction: Germany to win.

Probable lineups:

  • Germany: Neuer, Kimmich, Rüdiger, Tah, Raum, Nmecha, Pavlović, Sané, Musiala, Wirtz, Havertz.
  • Paraguay: Gill, Maidana, Canale, Gómez, Velázquez, Cáceres, Enciso, Galarza, Cubas, Almirón, Ávalos.
