On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round will take place at Prague's epet ARENA, where Sparta will host Lyon. The match is scheduled to kick off at 20:00 local time (21:00 Kyiv time). The return fixture will be played on August 11 in France, with the winner advancing to the tournament’s main stage.

Sparta: the attack is gathering momentum, but the defense remains vulnerable

The new season has started on a mixed note for the Prague side. In the Czech league opener, Sparta suffered a surprising 1-3 defeat to Zbrojovka, but quickly bounced back at home with a 3-1 win over Zlin. Andrew Irving, Jonatan Braut Brunes, and Adam Karabec all found the net.

Brunes’ quick adaptation is particularly significant. The Norwegian striker, a recent signing from Rakow, scored on his debut. Alongside Lukas Haraslin, Paco Alcacer, and Karabec, he gives the hosts several attacking options. At home, Sparta will surely look to play boldly: heading to France without a lead from Prague could prove extremely dangerous.

The Czech side’s main issue is their play off the ball. Before the official season kicked off, Sparta suffered a heavy 1-5 defeat to Nordsjaelland, then conceded three to Zbrojovka and once to Zlin. In Sparta’s last three matches, there have been at least four goals scored, with both teams hitting the target in each encounter.

Personnel issues are also far from ideal. According to FotMob, Sivert Mannsverk, Patrik Vidra, Peter Vindahl Jensen, Uchenna Aririerisim, Ondrej Penxa, and Magnus Kofod Andersen are either injured or doubtful. The fitness of recent signing Roman Macek is also in question. The problems are especially acute in central midfield, the area Macek was brought in to strengthen.

Lyon: a convincing run ends with a painful defeat

The French club enters the qualifiers as the favorite, but their latest test ahead of the Czech trip ended in disappointment. On July 29, Paulo Fonseca’s team slumped to a 0-4 defeat to Real Betis, conceding twice in each half. The Spaniards regularly exploited open spaces between the lines and punished Lyon for defensive lapses in transition.

Yet overall, Lyon’s preseason results can’t be called a failure. Before the Betis game, the French side beat Wolfsburg 2-0, Servette 2-1, St. Gallen 6-3, and Macon 71 5-2. Lyon boasts plenty of quick, technically gifted players, enabling them to create chances even without dominating possession.

In the last friendly, the starting lineup featured Dominik Greif, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Clinton Mata, Ruben Kluivert, Tanner Tessmann, Tyler Morton, Corentin Tolisso, Jeremy Doku, and Remy Imbert. In the second half, Malik Fofana, Ernest Nuamah, Orel Mangala, and Abner all saw action. As of this writing, FotMob reports no confirmed injury absences for Lyon ahead of the Prague clash.

Probable lineups

  • Sparta: Surovchik — Suchomel, Sorensen, Shevinsky, Mercado — Sohurek, Irving, Karabec — Alcacer, Brunes, Haraslin.
  • Lyon: Greif — Maitland-Niles, Mata, Kluivert, Abner — Tessmann, Morton, Tolisso — Nuamah, Imbert, Fofana.

The home lineup is based on the starting eleven from the win over Zlin, while Lyon may make changes following their heavy defeat to Betis.

Match facts and head-to-head record

  • Sparta and Lyon have played six official matches: the French club has won five, with one draw.
  • The teams met in Prague during the 2021-22 Europa League group stage — Lyon won 4-3.
  • In each of Sparta’s last three matches, over 2.5 goals have been scored.
  • In each of Lyon’s last five matches listed in their current form, at least three goals have been scored.

An open game looks the most logical scenario: Sparta vs Lyon prediction

In terms of individual skill, Lyon outclass their opponents, but after conceding four to Betis it’s risky to back the French side for an outright away win. Sparta have already played two official matches and should be sharper in terms of match fitness. Plus, the Prague side knows that their home leg offers the best chance to challenge the favorite.

Meanwhile, Sparta’s defense gives little reason to expect a cagey match. The hosts have conceded in every recent game but have also consistently threatened at the other end. Lyon, too, have had a productive preseason and feature rapid players who can exploit any space left by the opposition.

This opening leg doesn’t have to become a cautious, tactical battle. The hosts need to chase goals on home soil, and the French side are unlikely to abandon their attacking style. The safest bet is not on the winner, but on the game’s overall goal tally.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals.
