One of the marquee fixtures of Championship Matchday 30 will take place on Saturday at Riverside Stadium, where promotion-chasing Middlesbrough are set to host Norwich City. Here's my take on this clash, building on the outstanding form both teams have shown at the start of 2026.

Match preview

Middlesbrough are enjoying a powerful campaign, currently sitting second in the league table. Boro have hit their stride, winning four of their last five league games. In the previous round, Swedish manager Kim Hellberg's side produced a scintillating display to thrash Preston 4-0, closing the gap to leaders Coventry City to just three points. The team has been prolific in front of goal, with Morgan Whittaker and Tommy Conway in outstanding form, consistently threatening the opposition's box.

At home, Middlesbrough traditionally dominate proceedings, dictating the tempo and imposing their style on visiting teams. The stats back up Boro's strength at the Riverside: they've scored more than 1.5 goals in the majority of their home fixtures. Their only recent setback was an FA Cup defeat to Fulham, but that result has allowed Hellberg’s men to focus fully on the fight for Premier League promotion—making them an even more dangerous opponent in their current form.

Norwich, under the guidance of Philippe Clement, are experiencing a true renaissance after a difficult start to the season. Though the Canaries are still in the lower half of the table (18th place), their current run is impressive: they are on a three-game winning streak in the league. Last time out, Norwich pulled off a shock by beating league leaders Coventry City 2-1. This result showed Clement’s side has found their confidence and are ready to take on any favourite.

Norwich’s attack has burst into life, racking up nine goals in their last three matches, including a 5-0 demolition of West Brom. Jovon Makama has been clinical in front of goal, while the midfield has become much more aggressive in pressing. Although defensive lapses still occur, Norwich’s high scoring rate has helped mask those issues. The Canaries travel to Middlesbrough fully intent on extending their winning run and pulling clear of the relegation zone once and for all.

Match facts and head-to-head

  • Over two goals have been scored in each of Middlesbrough’s last five games.
  • Middlesbrough have scored first in four of their last five games.
  • Norwich are on a four-match winning run in all competitions.
  • Five of Norwich’s last six matches have produced at least three goals.
  • The "over 2.5 goals" bet has landed in six of the last seven head-to-head meetings between these sides.
  • In the reverse fixture earlier this season, Middlesbrough won 2-1 away from home.

Probable lineups

  • Middlesbrough: Brynn - Ayling, Fry, Munroe, Silvera - Hackney, Browne, Morris - Whittaker, Castledine, Conway
  • Norwich: Kovačević - Fisher, McConville, Córdoba, Chrisene - Mattsson, McLean, Ben Slimane - Springett, Ahmed, Makama

Prediction

I expect this to be a high-scoring encounter. Both sides are on fire, finding the net with ease in recent rounds. Middlesbrough need a win to keep pace with the leaders, while Norwich are playing with confidence and aren’t afraid to take the game to even the top clubs. Given both teams’ attacking potential and their head-to-head history, my prediction is over 2.5 goals.
