Los Angeles — LA Galaxy: a derby where nothing is insignificant
On October 26, we will witness one of the fiercest rivalries in American soccer — El Tráfico, featuring Los Angeles FC (LAFC) and LA Galaxy. The match will take place at BMO Stadium and will be far more than just another city derby: it will be a serious test of both teams’ ambitions as the regular season reaches its climax. As of October 24, the margin for error is particularly slim: LAFC are looking to cement their place in the playoff zone, while Galaxy also need points to improve their position in the Western Conference.
It is important to understand that in this rivalry, the standings do not always determine the nature of the game. There is fierce competition, a history of mutual grievances and a desire to prove who is truly the stronger side in soccer-mad Los Angeles. That is why even a cautious opening does not guarantee a calm finish: one goal can completely change the script of the match.
LAFC: a chance to settle the playoff question
For the hosts, this is a match in which they can accomplish several objectives at once. First, beating their main city rivals always carries special value. Second, three points would help the team strengthen its position ahead of the decisive matches of the season. Before the derby, LAFC sit sixth in the Western Conference with 46 points from 31 games. Galaxy are eighth with 40 points.
Another intriguing factor is the coaching situation. Following Mark dos Santos’ departure, the team has been led by interim head coach Xavi Tamarit. LAFC have not lost in their three matches under his command: they drew with Vancouver and New York City, and defeated Austin 3-1. Now the new coaching staff face a test in a far more emotionally charged fixture.
The hosts’ main weapons are Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-min. Bouanga heads into the derby with 17 goals and five assists in the league, while the South Korean forward has contributed seven goals and 15 assists. Son is particularly valuable in the creation of chances: he can not only finish an attack but also deliver the pass that cuts through the opponent’s defense.
Under Tamarit, LAFC have looked to control possession more and move forward in an organized manner. However, the hosts must avoid becoming too attack-minded: Galaxy know how to exploit open spaces, and losing the ball in midfield could lead to a dangerous counterattack.
LA Galaxy: character against the statistics
The visitors are in a more difficult situation, but they certainly should not be written off. Galaxy head into the derby after a 2-2 home draw with San Diego. The team showed decent attacking potential, but once again failed to hold on to its advantage and see out the match for a win. For a side that have already conceded 52 goals in the league, their defensive problems remain a serious cause for concern.

Much will depend on João Klauss and Marco Reus in attack. The Brazilian striker has scored nine goals in MLS despite missing a spell of the season through injury. Reus remains the team’s key link man: the German can organize an attack, find a free teammate and finish a move himself. He has eight goals and nine assists to his name.
At the same time, the visitors must use the ball intelligently. If they allow LAFC to attack positionally on a consistent basis and sit too deep around their own penalty area, the hosts’ pressure may eventually pay off. But committing too many players forward without need would also be dangerous: Bouanga’s pace and Son’s movement can punish any lapse in concentration.
Another issue is the squad situation. According to pre-match reports, LAFC have several absences, including injured players Timothy Tillman and Jeremy Ebobisse. For Galaxy, the unavailable players include Kyogo Furuhashi, Riqui Puig and Hirving Lozano. The absence of such players could affect squad depth and the options available to strengthen the team during the match.
The history of the rivalry and what to expect from the game
El Tráfico is a derby that has developed its own history since 2018. Ahead of the latest meeting, the overall record in official matches is even: both teams have ten wins, with seven draws. However, LAFC have generally had the upper hand in recent encounters. In July this year, they thrashed Galaxy 3-0, with Bouanga and Son both getting on the scoresheet.
There is little reason to expect the upcoming match to be an exact repeat of the summer clash. Galaxy have enough attacking quality to cause their opponents problems, while the added motivation of a city derby can sometimes make up for a difference in class and league position. Nevertheless, LAFC look like the more balanced team, particularly given their defensive reliability.
A great deal could depend on the opening 20–30 minutes. If the hosts score early, the game could open up, giving the fans plenty of dangerous moments at both ends. If Galaxy manage to withstand the initial pressure, the visitors may gradually seize the initiative and look for openings through Reus and Klauss.
LAFC are favorites thanks to their more reliable defense, superior position in the standings and the quality of their attacking unit. But derbies are rarely straightforward, and both sides have more than enough motivation.
My prediction: Los Angeles FC to win
