Real Sociedad: Matarazzo’s team are beginning to find solutions in attack
Real Sociedad’s start to the season has been far from straightforward. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side lost away to Betis and Real Madrid before recovering with a 2-1 home victory over Espanyol, a goalless draw against Celta Vigo and a dramatic 3-2 win at Elche. Across their first five league matches, the Basques have scored six goals and conceded eight.
The victory over Elche was particularly revealing. Job Ochieng and Yangel Herrera put Real Sociedad 2-0 ahead, but after Jon Martín was sent off the hosts fought back to level the score. Luka Sučić eventually scored the winner in the 90th minute. Real Sociedad allowed ten shots on target in that match, which underlines that Matarazzo’s side can still look vulnerable when the game becomes stretched.
There is considerably better news regarding squad depth. As of the latest update, Álvaro Odriozola is the only first-team player still sidelined, while players who had physical problems earlier in the summer have gradually returned. Matarazzo therefore has plenty of attacking options, with Mikel Oyarzabal, Takefusa Kubo, Gonçalo Guedes, Ander Barrenetxea, Orri Óskarsson and Ochieng all included in the European squad.
Oyarzabal remains the reference point of the attack, but Ochieng has made a particularly impressive impact. The Kenyan winger scored against Elche and provided two assists, offering direct running and speed that can be especially useful against an aggressive pressing opponent.
Bournemouth: plenty of intensity, but leads remain a major problem
Bournemouth are entering a completely new chapter. Marco Rose replaced Andoni Iraola during the summer and has largely retained the aggressive pressing philosophy that became familiar under the Spaniard, with only a few tactical adjustments. The Cherries want to recover the ball high, attack quickly and keep their opponents under constant pressure.
The problem has been game management. Bournemouth became the first Premier League team to score first in each of their opening three matches of a season without winning any of them. They led Manchester City until the closing stages before losing 2-1, conceded a late equaliser against Everton and then surrendered a two-goal advantage in a 2-2 draw at Newcastle. In total, Rose’s side dropped seven points from winning positions in those three league games.
There have still been encouraging signs. Bournemouth responded with a 4-0 cup victory over Lincoln City, while the attacking structure around Evanilson, Justin Kluivert, Marcus Tavernier and Rayan gives Rose several ways to threaten opponents. Tavernier has already scored twice in the league and has been one of Bournemouth’s most dangerous players in the opening weeks.
The English side do have more significant personnel problems than their hosts. Eli Junior Kroupi, Julian Araujo, Amine Adli and Veljko Milosavljević are currently unavailable, although there are no reported suspensions. Bournemouth’s European squad still contains plenty of attacking quality, including Evanilson, Kluivert, Tavernier, Rayan, David Brooks and Álvaro Rodríguez.

Bournemouth have enough intensity and pace to make Real Sociedad uncomfortable, particularly if Rose’s pressing forces mistakes during the Basques’ build-up. Evanilson gives them a reference point through the middle, while Tavernier, Kluivert and Rayan can attack the spaces around him.
At the same time, Bournemouth have repeatedly struggled to protect advantages once matches become stretched. That is dangerous against a Real Sociedad side with Oyarzabal’s movement, Guedes’ directness, Sučić’s quality between the lines and the increasingly influential Ochieng. Matarazzo’s team have also shown that they can continue creating chances even when a match becomes chaotic.
Real Sociedad have conceded in four of five league matches, while Bournemouth have found the net in every competitive game this season. The visitors’ first three Premier League fixtures all saw both teams score, and their aggressive approach is unlikely to suddenly become conservative on a historic European night.
