International, Tbilisi, Mikheil Meskhi Stadium

The first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round between Iberia 1999 and Slovan Bratislava will take place on Tuesday in Tbilisi at the Mikheil Meskhi Arena. The champions of Georgia have already battled through one tough round, while Slovakia's top club is only just kicking off their new European campaign under the guidance of Yaya Touré.

Iberia 1999: results are there, but reliability is still lacking

In the first qualifying round, Iberia overcame Estonia's Flora, but it was far from a flawless performance. After a 3-2 away win, the Georgian side drew 2-2 at home, letting their opponents come back from a two-goal deficit.

The main issue for Andrey Demchenko's squad remains their defensive play. Iberia conceded four goals across two legs against Flora, and in their last seven international matches, they've only once allowed fewer than two goals. The situation is made worse by the injury to 17-year-old Andria Bartishvili and the departure of Armel Zohouri to Reims.

Slovan Bratislava: new coach, same European ambitions

Slovan clinched their seventh consecutive Slovak league title, but the summer brought a major overhaul on the coaching bench. Vladimir Weiss was replaced by Yaya Touré, who had never before managed a senior team, but in five preseason friendlies he secured three wins and a draw.

The core of the squad has remained intact, and the main attacking weapons are still in Bratislava. Šporar, Tigran Barseghyan, and Nikolai Kuharevich were the club's top scorers last season, so even with several veterans departing, Slovan's attack remains a threat. However, the Slovak side traditionally looks less assured away from home than on their own turf.

Match facts and head-to-head

  • At least three goals have been scored in five of Iberia's last six European matches.
  • Both teams have scored in five of the Georgian club's last six international fixtures.
  • Slovan have won only one of their last nine away qualifiers in European competition.

Defense won’t withstand the pressure: prediction for Iberia 1999 vs Slovan Bratislava

Iberia can create problems for the favorites thanks to home advantage and their current match fitness. However, conceding four times against Flora suggests the Georgian side will struggle to keep out a more potent attack.

Slovan boast greater international experience and squad depth, but their poor away record in European qualifiers makes it hard to back them for a straightforward win. Most likely, the Slovak champions will find the net, but the final outcome—and a place in the next round—will be decided back in Bratislava.
