Fulham approach the game after a rather emotional London derby against Chelsea. On Monday, Álvaro Arbeloa's side lost 2-3 at home, although they came from behind and were close to snatching a draw. Overall, the start to the season hasn't been bad: before the loss to Chelsea, there was a win over Manchester City at the end of last season, and the team looked solid throughout their summer friendlies.
The big question now is how strong a lineup Arbeloa will field. The League Cup traditionally gives managers a chance to shuffle their squads and check on the nearest reserves, so don't expect Fulham's absolute best eleven. This is where things get interesting. Wimbledon surely know that sitting back for 90 minutes is a questionable strategy. Any Fulham mistake—especially with significant rotation—could hand the visitors a chance. After all, cup matches are famous for springing surprises.
But to be honest, Fulham are clear favourites. The Cottage should help the hosts seize the initiative from the off, and their higher individual quality will likely show as the match unfolds. After a gruelling match against Chelsea, the Londoners will hardly want another footballing thriller.
I expect the hosts to dominate possession, create chances, and gradually wear down the opposition. Wimbledon might hold out for a while, but over the course of the match, the class difference should prove decisive.
