The head-to-head with Benfica saw Kane and company battling for top spot in the group. Anatoliy Trubin was magnificent in goal for the Portuguese, and Schjelderup’s strike proved to be the only goal of the game.
Bayern’s defeat arguably worked in their favor, as it handed them a less formidable opponent in the Round of 16. Even before the Benfica clash, it was clear that a loss would set up a tie with Flamengo, while the group winners would face Chelsea and have one less day to prepare.
