CSKA Sofia vs Monaco: a stern test for the French favorites
On October 15, CSKA Sofia will host Monaco in the opening round of the Conference League league phase. For the French club, it is a new European challenge, while the hosts have an opportunity to make a resounding statement on the international stage.

The Bulgarians reached this tournament after falling short in the Europa League qualifying rounds, where they lost to Greece’s OFI 0-5 on aggregate. However, CSKA should by no means be written off: Markus Gisdol’s side come into the match on a solid run of results and will be counting on the backing of their supporters. At home, the hosts will look to remain as organized as possible and deny their opponents the freedom to dictate play.
Monaco’s situation is more intriguing. Philippe Clement’s team reached the league phase after comfortably seeing off Poland’s Górnik, winning 7-3 on aggregate. The Monegasques have plenty of attacking talent capable of deciding a moment through individual brilliance. Lamine Camara deserves particular attention, as his passing and ability to find pockets of space could pose a serious problem for CSKA’s defense. The Parisians have nothing to do with it here — we are talking specifically about the club from the principality, which intends to start the tournament with a victory.
The key question is whether the hosts can withstand the pressure. If CSKA can stay compact in midfield and avoid mistakes when building out from the back, the Bulgarians will have opportunities to launch dangerous counterattacks. But if Monaco seize the initiative early, the visitors will find it easier to unlock the defense with their pace and combination play.
At the same time, the home advantage should not be underestimated: opening European fixtures are rarely straightforward, especially when a favorite has to play away from home. CSKA are capable of making this a contest, but Monaco hold the edge in squad depth and individual quality.
Prediction: Monaco to win.
