The new Championship season is just getting underway, and we’re already being treated to an intriguing fixture: Charlton will host Derby at The Valley.

For the hosts, this marks their second consecutive campaign in England’s second tier, while the visitors arrive with far loftier ambitions. The match kicks off on August 15 at 15:00 UK time.

Last season, Charlton managed to secure their Championship status, though it was anything but easy. Nathan Jones’ side finished 19th and struggled towards the end of the campaign—just one win in the final nine rounds. Still, simply staying up was a positive outcome for a club that had only just returned after a five-year absence.

Now, the Addicks will be looking to take a step forward. Jones remains at the helm, with his contract running until 2030. Over the summer, the manager spoke about the need to significantly strengthen the squad, so this season will show just how well the club has managed its overhaul.

Derby, meanwhile, find themselves in a very different position. The Rams finished eighth last season with 69 points, narrowly missing out on the play-off places. They also scored 67 goals—more than many teams in the upper half of the table. So, after such a campaign, it’s only natural to expect John Eustace’s men to be fighting for a top-six spot at the very least.

Interestingly, Derby’s start to the season is notable both for their opponent and their schedule. Their opening fixture takes them straight to London, and just a week later they’ll play their first home match of the season against Cardiff. Eustace will surely be aiming for a positive start, especially since the Rams were solid both home and away last year.

As for Charlton, they’ll be looking to make the most of their main advantage—the home ground and the backing of their fans. The Valley can create a fantastic atmosphere, and for a team that spent much of last season fighting for survival, a good start could be crucial from a psychological standpoint.

All things considered, I’d put a bit more faith in Derby. The visitors look like a side better prepared to challenge for the top spots, while Charlton still have to prove they can improve on last season’s showing. But the first round is always unpredictable—both teams are still finding their rhythm, so the Rams shouldn’t expect an easy ride.

My prediction: both teams to score – yes.
