The Valley can create a fantastic atmosphere, and for a team that spent much of last season fighting for survival, a good start could be crucial from a psychological standpoint.
All things considered, I’d put a bit more faith in Derby. The visitors look like a side better prepared to challenge for the top spots, while Charlton still have to prove they can improve on last season’s showing. But the first round is always unpredictable—both teams are still finding their rhythm, so the Rams shouldn’t expect an easy ride.
