Canada’s national team has long been underestimated and considered somewhat of a mid-tier team in the CONCACAF region. Suriname, on the other hand, can only dream of qualifying for a major tournament. Currently, the team is participating in the second stage of World Cup qualification and leads their group with two victories in the opening rounds. They defeated Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 4-1 and Anguilla 4-0.
In the CONCACAF Nations League, Suriname finished second in their group, just one point behind Costa Rica, but ahead of Guatemala. Suriname won two of their four matches and lost once. In the home match against Canada, Suriname couldn’t offer much resistance, failing to register a single shot on target, and were beaten 1-0.
