Kaiserslautern Kaiserslautern

On Wednesday, October 28, Hannover 96 will host 1. FC Kaiserslautern at the Heinz von Heiden Arena in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:45 CET. Although both clubs compete in the 2. Bundesliga, their situations could hardly be more different: Hannover sit 16th with eight points after nine rounds, while Kaiserslautern are third with 18 points and only four goals conceded.

Hannover 96: the coaching change has not yet produced the desired reaction

Hannover made a major change in September by appointing Sandro Wagner as head coach on a contract until June 2028. However, the former Germany international is still waiting for his first league victory in charge. His competitive league debut ended in a 3-0 defeat at Magdeburg, Hannover then drew 1-1 with St. Pauli before losing Sunday's derby 2-0 away to Eintracht Braunschweig. In those three league matches under Wagner, the team have scored only once and conceded six goals.

The latest defeat was particularly painful. Hannover improved after the break in Braunschweig and created opportunities to equalise, but their problems in the final third appeared once again. The result dropped the ambitious promotion hopefuls into 16th place with a record of two wins, two draws and five defeats, while their 8:15 goal difference underlines how difficult the opening months of the campaign have been.

Personnel has also become an issue. Hannover's latest official availability update before the derby listed Lars Gindorf, Mustapha Bundu, Benedikt Pichler, Karl Steinmann and Joschua Siewert among the unavailable players, while Bastian Allgeier subsequently missed the match because of an adductor problem. The club's next detailed update is expected around the pre-match press conference, so Wagner may again have to work with a reduced group.

There is at least one positive cup memory this season. Hannover demolished SV Hemelingen 9-1 in the opening round, but Wednesday's test is on a completely different level.

Kaiserslautern: defensive stability has become their biggest weapon

Torsten Lieberknecht's Kaiserslautern arrive in Hannover in a much healthier sporting position. The Red Devils are third in the 2. Bundesliga with five wins, three draws and just one defeat from nine matches. Even more impressive is their defensive record: only four goals conceded, the best figure in the division.

Their recent results reinforce that impression. Kaiserslautern followed a 0-0 draw at Heidenheim with a 2-0 home victory over Bochum and then produced an excellent 1-0 away win against second-placed Nürnberg. That means Lieberknecht's side have kept four clean sheets in their last five league fixtures. Against Nürnberg, Julian Krahl was excellent when required, while substitute Erencan Yardımcı scored the decisive goal shortly after half-time.

Kaiserslautern's structure is particularly well suited to knockout football. Lieberknecht can rely on a compact back three, disciplined central midfield and several different attacking options. In Nürnberg, Jan Elvedi, Maxwell Gyamfi and Alex Murphy formed the back line, with Paul Joly and Mika Haas operating in the wider positions. Naatan Skyttä and Mario Sauer provided creativity ahead of Semih Şahin, while Yardımcı, Mergim Berisha and Marlon Ritter all offered options from the bench.

The latest official personnel information before the Nürnberg match ruled out Kelven Frees with a hamstring muscle injury and goalkeeper Enis Kamga with an eye inflammation, while Jacob Rasmussen had returned to availability.

Their route through the first cup round was far less spectacular than Hannover's, but perhaps more representative of their strengths: Kaiserslautern needed extra time before beating Waldhof Mannheim 1-0 away from home.

Match facts

  • Hannover are 16th in the 2. Bundesliga with eight points and an 8:15 goal difference after nine matches.
  • Kaiserslautern are third with 18 points and have conceded only four league goals.
  • Hannover are winless in Sandro Wagner's first three league matches in charge.
  • Kaiserslautern have kept four clean sheets in their last five league games.
  • The clubs have previously met only twice in the DFB-Pokal, with their most recent cup encounter coming in January 1967.

Hannover have home advantage, but Kaiserslautern look much harder to beat

A cup tie between two clubs from the same division should theoretically be finely balanced, but current form points clearly in Kaiserslautern's direction. Hannover are still adapting to Wagner's ideas, have scored only once in their last three league matches and enter the game only three days after an emotionally draining derby defeat.

Kaiserslautern, meanwhile, have built their excellent start around defensive discipline. They have just beaten Bochum and Nürnberg without conceding, and their ability to stay compact should make life extremely uncomfortable for a Hannover attack that is already struggling to create and convert clear chances.

The home side have enough individual quality to make this competitive, and cup football always adds an element of unpredictability. Still, Kaiserslautern's consistency, defensive organisation and current confidence make backing them to avoid defeat the more convincing option.

Prediction: 1. FC Kaiserslautern to win or draw (X2).
