England, Norwich, Carrow Road

Norwich City and Bolton Wanderers meet at Carrow Road on Sunday, September 20, with kick-off scheduled for 13:30 BST. After seven Championship rounds, Norwich sit 12th with nine points and a 13-13 goal difference, while Bolton are 20th with seven points, having scored seven and conceded 12.

Norwich: plenty of attacking quality, but defensive stability is still missing

Philippe Clement's Norwich have been one of the Championship's more entertaining teams in recent weeks. Their last five league matches have produced three victories and two defeats, with the Canaries scoring 12 goals over that stretch. They beat Burnley 4-1, Sheffield United 3-1 and Birmingham 2-1, but defeats against Stoke and Middlesbrough showed that their aggressive approach can still leave considerable space at the other end.

The 4-3 loss at Middlesbrough was a perfect example. Mohamed Touré scored inside the opening minute, and second-half goals from Jovon Makama and Jaden Wright brought Norwich back into the game, only for Clement's side to concede the decisive goal in stoppage time. It was another demonstration of their attacking potential, but also of the defensive vulnerability that has left them with 13 goals conceded after seven rounds.

Touré remains the main reference point in attack, while Andre Brooks, Anthony Musaba and Anis Ben Slimane provide support between the lines and from wide areas. Clement also has options from the bench, with Makama already showing that he can make an impact. According to the latest injury updates, Ali Ahmed, Lucien Mahovo and Mirko Topić remain unavailable.

Bolton: Cardiff win brings relief, but the away record remains a problem

Bolton finally stopped their losing run with a 1-0 home victory over Cardiff, with Thierry Gale scoring the late winner. It was a badly needed result for Steven Schumacher after defeats to Lincoln, Sheffield United, Millwall and West Ham.

However, their numbers away from home are far less encouraging. Bolton have yet to win on the road in the Championship this season, recording one draw and two defeats from three away matches. They have also conceded seven goals in those fixtures. Facing a Norwich side that has already scored 13 times in seven league games represents a significantly different defensive test.

Schumacher has recently used Sam Dalby through the middle, with Kyliane Dong, Rúben Rodrigues and Samuel Iling-Junior operating around him. Atsuki Ito also made his competitive league debut from the bench against Cardiff and gives the coach another midfield option. Chris Forino missed that match through injury, while Lewis Brunt and Luca Stephenson were also unavailable in the latest team updates. Akin Famewo, meanwhile, returned to the bench.

Probable lineups

  • Norwich: Kovacevic — Fisher, McConville, Córdoba, Chrisene — McLean, Mattsson — Brooks, Ben Slimane, Musaba — Touré.
  • Bolton: Bazunu — Larrazabal, Toal, Davies, Conway — Sheehan, Erhahon — Iling-Junior, Rodrigues, Dong — Dalby.

Match facts and head-to-heads

  • Norwich have scored 12 goals across their last five Championship matches.
  • Bolton are still without an away league victory this season, with one draw and two defeats.
  • Bolton have conceded 12 goals in seven Championship rounds.
  • Norwich are unbeaten in the last three competitive meetings with Bolton, winning the two most recent encounters 3-2 and 4-0.

Norwich should create enough chances to expose Bolton's away weakness

Bolton's victory over Cardiff should improve confidence, and Schumacher's team are capable of making this competitive if they can slow the game down and deny Norwich space between the lines. The problem is that their performances away from home have been considerably less convincing, particularly defensively.

Norwich are hardly flawless themselves, but Clement's side currently possess more attacking variety and have repeatedly shown that they can score multiple goals. Touré provides a central threat, while Brooks, Musaba and Ben Slimane can attack from different zones, and the Canaries have enough depth to increase the tempo from the bench.

A straight home victory looks the logical direction, but given Norwich's scoring numbers and Bolton's problems on the road, the more ambitious handicap is an attractive option. A one-goal Norwich victory would return the stake, while a win by two or more completes the selection.

Prediction: Norwich City (-1) Asian handicap.
