One of the biggest matches of the second UEFA Women’s Champions League matchday will take place at Groupama Stadium on Wednesday, September 30. OL Lyonnes welcome Chelsea at 21:00 CET, with both teams entering the contest on three points. Lyon opened their European campaign with a spectacular 8-0 victory away to Servette, while Chelsea had to work much harder for a 1-0 home win over Austria Wien.

OL Lyonnes: 30 goals in four matches
Jonatan Giráldez’s team could hardly have made a more intimidating start to the new season. Lyon have won their first four competitive matches, scoring 30 goals and conceding only three. Their domestic victories were emphatic, and the French champions raised the bar even higher in Geneva by destroying Servette 8-0 in their Champions League opener.
Marie-Antoinette Katoto scored a hat-trick against Servette, while Melchie Dumornay added two goals. Lyon were already 4-0 ahead by half-time and continued attacking after the break, demonstrating not only their individual quality but also the extraordinary depth available to Giráldez. Caroline Weir and Tabitha Chawinga made their first appearances of the season from the bench, while Liana Joseph returned after the serious injury she suffered in October 2025.
The biggest challenge for Chelsea will be dealing with Lyon’s variety in attack. Salma Paralluelo stretches the pitch, Dumornay is dangerous between the lines, while Katoto and Ada Hegerberg give the French side two elite penalty-box threats. Lyon have scored at least seven goals in every competitive match this season, although they did concede in all three of their domestic league games.
Chelsea: defensive stability faces its toughest examination
Chelsea’s start has been less explosive but equally convincing in terms of results. Sonia Bompastor’s side remain unbeaten in competitive football this season and have scored in every match. After a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, the Blues crushed Manchester United 5-0, beat Birmingham City 2-0 and then opened the Champions League league phase with a 1-0 victory over Austria Wien.
The Austria game, however, also provided a warning. Wieke Kaptein’s excellent long-range goal proved decisive, but Austria produced six shots on target and kept Chelsea under pressure for significant periods. Against a Lyon attack operating at a completely different level, Bompastor will need considerably more control without the ball.
There is also a major personal storyline. Bompastor returns to the club where she enjoyed enormous success as both a player and coach, while Ellie Carpenter, Lucy Bronze, Kadeisha Buchanan and Melvine Malard are among the Chelsea players with Lyon connections.
Keira Walsh is the main fitness question from Chelsea’s latest European outing. The midfielder was withdrawn after only 20 minutes against Austria Wien after feeling discomfort in her quadriceps. Bompastor described the substitution as precautionary, so her availability for Lyon will depend on the subsequent assessment.

Lyon are playing at an extraordinary tempo, with Katoto and Dumornay already looking extremely sharp and Giráldez now having even more attacking options available from the bench.
At the same time, Lyon’s huge victories should not disguise the fact that they conceded against all three domestic opponents. Chelsea possess far more quality in transition than those teams and have found the net in every competitive appearance this season. With Bompastor knowing Lyon particularly well and players such as Baltimore, Thompson, Kaptein and Malard capable of exploiting space, the visitors should have opportunities of their own.
Rather than choosing a winner in a meeting between two European heavyweights, the goals market looks more attractive. Lyon’s attacking form makes a home goal extremely likely, while Chelsea have enough individual quality to prevent this from becoming another one-sided Lyon performance.
