Can Leeds deepen United's crisis? Prediction for Leeds vs Manchester United – 18.10.2026
Leeds United and Manchester United meet at Elland Road on Sunday, October 18, in Matchweek 7 of the Premier League. Daniel Farke's side enter the weekend seventh with nine points from six matches, while Michael Carrick's United sit 13th with only six. The gap is small, but the mood around the two clubs could hardly be more different.
Leeds: the first defeat has not changed the positive impression
Leeds suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season last weekend, losing 2-1 away to reigning champions Arsenal. However, the result does not tell the whole story. The Whites took the lead through James Justin and caused Arsenal serious problems before the hosts turned the match around after the break. Mikel Arteta himself highlighted Leeds' organisation, physicality and threat from set pieces.
Farke's team have generally looked difficult to break down. After six rounds, Leeds have two wins, three draws and only one defeat, with eight goals scored and five conceded. Their home record is particularly encouraging: a 1-1 draw against Brentford, a convincing 4-1 victory over Newcastle and a goalless draw with Crystal Palace mean they are still unbeaten at Elland Road in this Premier League campaign.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains the main reference point up front and has scored three league goals so far. Noah Okafor and Anton Stach give Farke additional options between the lines, while Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka provide balance in midfield.
There are still some personnel issues. Joe Rodon remains unavailable, Mateo Joseph is a long-term absentee, while former Manchester United winger Daniel James is a doubt because of a back problem. Leeds have no players suspended for Sunday's match.
Manchester United: Carrick desperately needs a response
The situation is much more uncomfortable for Manchester United. Carrick's side have managed only one victory in their opening six league matches, alongside three draws and two defeats, scoring and conceding nine goals. Their most recent Premier League outing ended 1-1 against Tottenham, and they then suffered a 2-0 Champions League defeat away to Atlético Madrid.
That result in Madrid extended United's winless streak to five matches in all competitions. Leny Yoro was sent off in the second half, while the defeat was followed by public criticism of the club's hierarchy from Lisandro Martínez, adding another layer of pressure around the team and Carrick.
There are also significant fitness concerns. Manuel Ugarte and Patrick Dorgu are unavailable, Benjamin Sesko remains a major doubt, while Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw and Noussair Mazraoui all need to be assessed ahead of the trip to Yorkshire. There are no Premier League suspensions.
United still possess enough individual quality to punish Leeds. Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo have three league goals each, while Matheus Cunha, Amad Diallo, Marcus Rashford and the recently introduced Carlos Baleba give Carrick several options to change the attacking structure. But at the moment, individual quality is not translating into consistent results.
Match facts and head-to-heads
- Leeds have lost only one of their first six Premier League matches this season.
- Manchester United have won only one of their first six league games.
- Leeds are unbeaten in all three Premier League home matches this season.
- United are winless in five consecutive matches across all competitions.
- Leeds have conceded only five league goals, compared with United's nine.
- Leeds won 2-1 at Old Trafford in April 2026, while the previous meeting at Elland Road finished 1-1.
Elland Road could expose United's problems again
Manchester United undoubtedly have the stronger collection of individual attacking players, but that advantage is difficult to trust in their current condition. Carrick's side are struggling for rhythm, have several important fitness doubts and travel to Elland Road only a few days after another physically and emotionally draining defeat.
Leeds, meanwhile, have already shown that they can compete with stronger opponents. Their pressing, physical intensity and direct play should create problems for a United side that has looked vulnerable whenever games become chaotic. Farke's team are also much more settled tactically and have yet to lose a league game at home this season.
There is always a risk in opposing a team containing Fernandes, Mbeumo and Cunha, but the current price makes the hosts attractive. Leeds won the previous meeting at Old Trafford and, in their present condition, have every chance of taking advantage of United's crisis again.
Prediction: Leeds United to win.
