Can Köln deepen Hamburg's nightmare start? Hamburg vs Cologne prediction - 19.09.2026
Hamburger SV and 1. FC Köln meet at the Volksparkstadion on Saturday, September 19, in Bundesliga Matchday 4. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:30 CEST. The new season is only three rounds old, but the pressure on Hamburg is already enormous: Merlin Polzin's side are bottom of the table without a point or a goal, while Köln travel north with four points and a much healthier early-season picture.

Hamburg: three defeats, no goals and a defence under huge pressure
It is difficult to imagine a worse Bundesliga start for Hamburg. HSV opened the campaign with a 2-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund, were then demolished 5-0 at home by Mainz and suffered another 5-0 loss away to RB Leipzig. After three rounds, their record is therefore zero points, zero goals scored and 12 conceded.
The Leipzig match once again exposed the biggest problem. Hamburg were willing to play forward and did have promising phases, but mistakes in possession and poor defensive reactions were brutally punished. After going into the final 20 minutes two goals behind, HSV conceded three times between the 72nd and 77th minutes. Once the structure disappeared, the team completely lost control.
Polzin is also dealing with personnel problems. Jean-Paul Boëtius Dickes and Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit are ruled out, while Sebastiaan Bornauw and Miro Muheim are considered doubtful. The potential absence of Bornauw in particular would be another blow to a defensive unit desperately searching for stability.
There is still enough technical quality in the squad to expect improvement. Albert Sambi Lokonga can help Hamburg control possession, Fabio Vieira and Albert Grønbæk offer creativity between the lines, while Terem Moffi gives them a more direct threat in the penalty area. But at the moment, individual quality has not translated into a functioning attack.
Cologne: not perfect, but René Wagner's team already looks more competitive
Köln's opening three matches have produced every possible result. René Wagner's team started with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim, then suffered a 4-1 defeat at Stuttgart before drawing 1-1 with Werder Bremen.
That latest performance was encouraging despite the dropped points. Thijs Dallinga missed an early penalty, but Köln continued attacking and Linton Maina put them ahead three minutes later after an assist from Ellyes Skhiri. Werder eventually equalised through Niclas Füllkrug, but Köln showed that they can consistently create dangerous situations even when the result does not go their way.
Five goals in three league games is hardly spectacular, but compared with Hamburg's attacking problems, the difference is significant. Maina gives Köln direct running from wide areas, Saïd El Mala can create one-on-one situations, Mikey Moore adds another unpredictable element behind the striker, while Ragnar Ache offers physical presence inside the box.
Wagner does have defensive concerns of his own. Timo Hübers remains unavailable with a knee problem, while Gian-Luca Waldschmidt is doubtful with a muscular injury. Even so, Köln currently look more settled in both phases of the game than their opponents.

Home advantage should give Hamburg more energy in the opening stages, and after two consecutive 5-0 defeats, a reaction in front of their own supporters is almost inevitable. The problem is that enthusiasm alone will not repair the structural issues that have repeatedly appeared once HSV lose the ball.
Köln are not defensively flawless, but they have already demonstrated much more attacking reliability. They have scored in every league game, possess several different options behind the striker and should find opportunities if Hamburg are once again forced to push numbers forward in search of their first goal of the season.
The visitors do not need to dominate possession for 90 minutes. Staying compact, surviving Hamburg's initial pressure and attacking the spaces that inevitably appear could be enough. Given HSV's current confidence level, defensive absences and alarming 0:12 start, Köln have the stronger case to take all three points.
