Can Czechia stop Yamal? Spain vs Czechia prediction — 03.10.2026
Spain and Czechia meet on Saturday, October 3, at the Carlos Tartiere in Oviedo in the third round of UEFA Nations League Group A3. Luis de la Fuente's world champions have started the competition with two wins, beating England 3-2 at Wembley before dismantling Croatia 4-1. Czechia, meanwhile, have lost 1-2 to Croatia and 0-2 to England, so the contrast in momentum could hardly be sharper.
Spain: can anyone slow down Lamine Yamal?
Spain have returned from their World Cup triumph without losing any momentum. The victory over Croatia extended their unbeaten run to 40 international matches, and once again it was Lamine Yamal who stole the show. The Barcelona winger scored twice in the 4-1 win after already finding the net against England, taking his Nations League tally to three goals in two appearances.
Yamal's complete numbers since the start of the new club season are extraordinary. For Barcelona, the 19-year-old has played eight matches in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing six assists. Add his two September Nations League appearances for Spain — three goals and one assist — and Yamal has already accumulated 11 goals and seven assists in 10 matches for club and country: 18 direct goal contributions in only 10 games. In La Liga alone, he has seven goals and four assists in seven matches, while his Champions League opener brought another goal and two assists.
That is the biggest tactical problem Czechia must solve. Yamal does not simply wait on the touchline for one-on-one situations: he moves inside, combines between the lines and creates space for Spain's overlapping players. Croatia struggled badly with precisely that problem. Yamal opened the scoring after only two minutes and later completed his brace, while also adding an assist in Spain's 4-1 victory.
There has been one personnel change in De la Fuente's squad. Eric García suffered a left-knee injury during the warm-up before the England match and withdrew from the camp, with Robin Le Normand called up as his replacement. Spain nevertheless retain enormous depth, with several elite options available to De la Fuente in midfield and attack.
Czechia: Santi Denia faces the most difficult test of his new project
Czechia are only at the beginning of a new cycle. Santi Denia was appointed in July on a two-year contract, becoming the first foreign head coach in the history of the Czech national team. The Spaniard knows his next opponent unusually well: he spent years working inside Spain's federation and previously worked alongside Luis de la Fuente.
So far, however, the results have been unforgiving. Czechia opened the Nations League with a 2-1 defeat against Croatia and then lost 2-0 at home to England. The second match became especially difficult after Pavel Šulc was sent off in the first half, leaving Denia's team to defend with ten men for most of the evening.
The attacking transition is also significant. Patrik Schick retired from international football after the World Cup, leaving Adam Hložek as one of the obvious reference points in attack. Against Spain, Czechia's opportunities are likely to come mainly in transition because long periods without possession appear unavoidable.

Yamal can unlock the Czech block: Spain vs Czechia prediction
Denia's knowledge of Spanish football should help Czechia prepare a compact defensive plan, and after two defeats they have every reason to avoid turning this into an open contest from the first minute. But knowing where Spain's danger comes from and actually stopping it are two very different things.
Spain have already scored three times at Wembley and four against Croatia, while Yamal is producing almost absurd numbers: 18 goal contributions in 10 matches for Barcelona and Spain since the club season began. Even if Czechia sit deep, Spain can attack through Yamal, Nico Williams, Oyarzabal's movement and the late runs of their midfielders.
With Spain producing seven goals in two group matches and Czechia already conceding four, another high-scoring Spanish performance looks entirely realistic. The hosts are capable of doing most of the work themselves, while one Czech counterattack or set piece could quickly push the match beyond three goals.
Prediction: Over 3.5 goals.
