Italy, Cagliari, Unipol Domus

On Sunday, August 30, in Serie A's second round, Cagliari will host Inter at the Unipol Domus stadium. Both teams kicked off the season with victories: the Sardinians pulled off a surprise by taking all three points in Parma, while the defending Italian champions dispatched Monza with authority. Now, Cristian Chivu's side faces their first away trip of the season—against an opponent who, so far, hasn't conceded a single goal in official matches this campaign.

Cagliari: Pragmatic football is already paying off

Fabio Pisacane's side has started the season in the most practical way possible. First, Cagliari edged out Arezzo 1-0 in the Coppa Italia, then followed up with a 1-0 away win against Parma. Alessandro Romano netted the winner in the 79th minute, and before that, the Sardinians calmly absorbed the pressure and themselves came close to scoring on several occasions.

The end of preseason and the first official fixtures have revealed a distinct Pisacane blueprint. In their last five matches, including friendlies, Cagliari beat Modena 1-0, drew 0-0 with Sampdoria, shared the points with Union in a 2-2 draw, and then secured 1-0 wins over Arezzo and Parma. In four out of those five games, the team managed to avoid a high-scoring shootout.

The hosts' squad is gradually getting deeper. Paul Mendy recovered from a groin problem before the opening round, Yerry Mina is back in the mix, and summer signing Aliou Fadera took part in his first training session with the team on August 25. However, Yael Trepy and Riyad Idrissi remain unavailable.

Inter: The champions open with four goals and a dominant second half

Inter's start was much more flamboyant. In their home clash with Monza, Chivu's men took the lead through Hakan Calhanoglu, allowed the visitors to equalize, but after halftime, seized total control. Piotr Zielinski, Francesco Pio Esposito, and Yann Bisseck extended the scoreline to 4-1. The Nerazzurri enjoyed nearly 70% possession and after the break, left Monza with virtually no chance of a comeback.

Crucially, the result didn't hinge solely on Lautaro Martinez. Calhanoglu and Zielinski added threat from deep, Esposito scored with a cheeky backheel, and Bisseck surged forward from defense. Chivu now has multiple sources of goals, with Marcus Thuram, John Stones, Ange-Yoan Bonny, and others waiting on the bench to add firepower if needed.

Inter's preparations for the Sardinian trip are going smoothly: on August 25 and 26, the squad trained fully under Chivu's guidance. Judging by the latest predicted lineups, the coach isn't planning to deviate from the 3-5-2 formation that worked so well in the opener.

Probable lineups

  • Cagliari: Caprile — Ze Pedro, Mina, Juan Rodriguez, Obert — Romano, Winks, Adopo — Fazzini, Maldini — Mendy.
  • Inter: Josep Martinez — Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni — Diouf, Barella, Calhanoglu, Zielinski, Dimarco — Lautaro Martinez, Pio Esposito.

Head-to-head: Sardinia has long been a happy hunting ground for Inter

The history of this fixture clearly favors the visitors. Last season, Inter beat Cagliari to nil twice—2-0 in Sardinia and 3-0 in Milan. Even more impressively, the Nerazzurri have won their last six Serie A away matches against Cagliari: 2-1, 3-1, 3-1, 2-0, 3-0, and 2-0. In their last three home games against Inter, the Sardinians have failed to score a single goal.

Cagliari can slow down the favorites, but home goals are in doubt

You can't underestimate Cagliari's start. Pisacane's side is well-organized off the ball, defends patiently, and has already shown they know how to grind out results in tight games. So expecting another walk in the park for Inter after their 4-1 win over Monza might be overly optimistic.

But there's a flip side. Cagliari's attack hasn't created much so far, and against Inter, finishing has been a recurring problem. Inter won both head-to-heads last season with an aggregate score of 5-0, kept clean sheets in their last three trips to Unipol Domus, and currently have enough quality in midfield to prevent the hosts from launching frequent counterattacks.

The game script seems quite clear: Cagliari will try to slow the tempo, crowd the midfield, and keep the scoreline goalless for as long as possible. Inter will dominate possession and gradually ramp up the pressure through Dimarco, Barella, and Calhanoglu. The hosts can make the match scrappy, but if they're to score against the reigning champions, it'll likely require a set piece or a major mistake from the visitors.

So rather than simply betting on another Inter win, it's more intriguing to focus on the hosts' scoring potential. Cagliari's current form and the nature of recent meetings suggest that at least one team will again finish without a goal. The most logical scoreline? 0-1 or 0-2.
