One of the key matches of round 28 in the English Premier League will take place this Saturday at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth, where the local side will host Sunderland. The Cherries haven’t tasted defeat in the league since early January and are now seriously eyeing a spot in European competition. Here’s my take on how this clash might unfold.

Match preview

Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth are currently enjoying one of their most consistent spells of the season. Despite a goalless draw against West Ham last time out – already their 11th stalemate of the campaign – the Cherries have collected 11 points from their last five matches, a tally bettered only by both Manchester clubs in that stretch. Victories over Tottenham and Liverpool (both 3-2), as well as a draw with Aston Villa, have shown that Bournemouth can play bravely at home – even against the league’s elite.

What’s more, Bournemouth have learned how to control games: just four goals conceded in their last five matches is a stat worthy of a team with European ambitions. True, the high number of draws has slowed their charge for fifth place, but with Chelsea only seven points ahead and an extra Champions League spot potentially up for grabs, the race is still very much alive.

Sunderland, meanwhile, come into this fixture on the back of three straight defeats – to Arsenal (0-3), Liverpool (0-1) and Fulham (1-3). It’s their worst run since returning to the top flight, though overall this season has been a success for the Black Cats: an 11-point cushion above the relegation zone gives them some breathing room. Régis Le Bris’s side can look organized at times, but a lack of squad depth is hampering their consistency.

Their away form is especially concerning: just two wins from 13 matches on the road, only six goals scored (the worst record in the league), and 20 conceded. Their last three away games have all ended in defeat – 0-3 at Brentford and Arsenal, 1-3 at West Ham. With that kind of momentum, a trip to one of the Premier League’s strongest home teams looks like a daunting challenge.

Probable lineups

  • Bournemouth: Petrovic, Jimenez, Hill, Senesi, Truffert, Adams, Scott, Ryan, Krupi, Adli, Evanilson.
  • Sunderland: Ruufs, Geertruida, Ballard, Alderete, Hume, Sadiki, Xhaka, Talbi, Le Fée, Angulo, Isidor.

Match facts and head-to-head

  • Bournemouth have picked up 11 points in their last five Premier League matches.
  • Sunderland have lost their last three away games in the Premier League by a combined score of 1-9.
  • Sunderland have scored just six goals in 13 away matches – the lowest tally in the league.

Prediction

Bournemouth currently look like a more mature and well-structured side, especially at home. Sunderland can compete in spells, but their lack of finishing and recurring defensive lapses on the road make it unlikely they’ll take anything from this game. Expect a pragmatic home victory.
