England, London, Emirates Stadium

After an extended international break, the Premier League returns, with the opening match of Matchweek 6 taking place at the Emirates. Arsenal will host Leeds on Saturday, October 10. On paper, the favorite is obvious, but the current Leeds side certainly does not look like a team that can be written off in advance.

The Gunners have made a powerful start to the campaign: four wins in five matches and second place with 12 points. Their only slip-up came just before the break, when Mikel Arteta’s side surprisingly suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brighton. Before that, the London club had beaten Coventry (3-0), Aston Villa (1-0), Chelsea (2-1) and Sunderland (2-0) in succession. Now the hosts have an excellent chance to quickly make amends in front of their supporters.

Leeds, by contrast, remain one of five unbeaten teams in the league. Daniel Farke’s side have two wins and three draws, while their nine points see them sitting fifth. Their 4-1 home demolition of Newcastle was particularly memorable. At the same time, the team has already shown that it can cause problems for more established opponents, as draws against Brighton and Brentford demonstrate.

Arsenal’s main concern at the moment is team selection. William Saliba remains sidelined with a back problem, while Kai Havertz picked up an injury during Germany’s international match and, according to the latest reports, could miss several weeks. Declan Rice, Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera are also doubts. Another separate issue is Christos Tzolis: the Arsenal newcomer suffered a hamstring injury in Greece’s match against the Netherlands and, based on the available information, will not be fit in time to face Leeds.

The visitors’ injury situation is not ideal either, but the key point is that Farke’s team knows how to play with courage. Leeds have no intention of parking the bus and have already shown in the opening rounds that they can create chances against strong opponents. Arsenal will therefore have to work hard, especially if they fail to score an early goal.

Even so, the Londoners should seize the initiative from the opening whistle at home. Arsenal are significantly stronger in terms of individual quality, and the painful defeat to Brighton will provide plenty of extra motivation. I expect an aggressive performance from the hosts and several dangerous chances in front of the visitors’ goal.

My prediction is an Arsenal win.
