One of Sunday’s La Liga fixtures will take place in Vitoria-Gasteiz at the Mendizorroza Stadium, where local side Alaves host Getafe. Both teams head into this clash with different objectives, but every point is equally valuable at this stage of the season. I’m backing a bet on the total goals in this encounter.

Match preview

Eduardo Coudet’s side are experiencing a mixed but generally positive spell. On the one hand, they crashed out of the Copa del Rey after a thrilling 2-3 defeat to Real Sociedad. On the other, back-to-back league wins over Betis and Espanyol have lifted them to 10th place. Those six points have significantly strengthened the Basques’ position, although the table is so tight that the gap from the relegation zone remains minimal.

At home, Alaves look far more confident than on the road. Eighteen points from 11 home matches is a strong argument in favor of the hosts. However, meetings with Getafe have traditionally been tough: Alaves have won just once in their last 13 head-to-head clashes, and this psychological factor could play a part.

Jose Bordalas’ team continue to walk the tightrope above the drop zone. Their winless run has stretched since late November, and two recent draws with Girona and Celta have only slightly slowed their slide. Getafe currently sit 17th, just a single point clear of the relegation zone, and every mistake could prove fatal.

That said, the Madrid side have not looked as hopeless away from home as some might expect. Eleven points from 11 away games is more mid-table form than that of a relegation struggler. Getafe typically rely on compactness, grit, and minimizing risks, so even with problems converting chances, they rarely collapse and often keep matches tight and low-scoring.

Probable lineups

  • Alaves: Sivera, Tenaglia, Garces, Pacheco, Jony, Kelebe, Blanco, Ibanez, Alena, Martinez, Boye.
  • Getafe: Soria, Dakonam, Duarte, Romero, Femenia, Milla, Arambarri, Iglesias, Martin, Satriano, Vazquez.

Match facts and head-to-head

  • Alaves have won just one of their last 13 La Liga matches against Getafe.
  • The first-round meeting between these teams this season ended in a 1-1 draw.
  • Getafe haven’t won in the league since late November.

Prediction

Both teams are in a situation where a defeat could come at too high a cost. Alaves will look to take the initiative at home, but Getafe will likely sit deep and try to disrupt the flow of the game. Given current form and their head-to-head history, a cautious match with few clear-cut chances seems the most logical expectation.
