A real test for the newcomer. Prediction for the match Orlando Pirates vs Milford
Milford FC
In the opening round of the new South African Betway Premiership season, reigning national champions Orlando Pirates will host top-flight newcomers Milford. The match will take place in Johannesburg on Saturday, August 1, kicking off at 15:00 Central European Time. Here’s my take on who will come out on top in this clash.
Head-to-head and statistical facts
- The Pirates have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four official matches.
- Orlando are unbeaten in official competitions since February.
- These teams have never met before.
The Pirates begin their title defense
Orlando Pirates enter the new campaign as defending South African champions. Abdessalam Ouaddou’s men are set to fight to keep their place at the top of the league and to shine on the international stage.
This summer, the Pirates strengthened their squad with defender Mteteli Mtiyane from Stellenbosch, winger Sbangani Zulu from Richards Bay, and Neo Rapoo and Gampani Lungu, both joining from Sivelele. Tabiso Lebitso went the other way as part of a swap deal. The club also parted ways with Bandile Shandu, Sipo Mbule, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Karim Kimwidi, and Gilberto, while star youngster Relebohile Mofokeng continued his career with Belgian side Union. The marquee signing, however, was Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen.
Orlando Pirates’ preseason preparations took place in Spain, where they played a series of friendlies against strong European and Middle Eastern opposition. This high-caliber sparring gave the coaching staff a chance to assess the newcomers and introduce fresh tactical ideas.
Despite some roster changes, the Pirates remain one of the deepest squads in the league. In front of their home fans, they’ll be eager to start the season with authority—especially with a demanding schedule ahead, featuring national cup ties and continental tournaments.
Milford's Betway Premiership debut
Milford are set to make their historic debut in South Africa’s top flight after a successful promotion campaign. Under the guidance of Xanti Pupuma, the team clinched a spot in the Betway Premiership, and now their main goal is to secure their place among the country’s elite clubs.
Fully aware of the gap between the first and premier divisions, the club’s management was busy in the transfer market. This summer, they brought in goalkeeper Sanele Mthembu, striker Tabang Mabena, midfielder Nomandela Yanelisa, and center-back Mnqobi Mbele, who were later joined by defender Admiro Chabangu and midfielder Khunganani Sigadi. At the same time, the club parted ways with several players and members of the coaching staff, continuing their overhaul ahead of their elite debut.
Preseason was intense. After medicals, the squad headed to training camp, focusing on physical conditioning and integrating a host of new faces. Milford also took part in the regional KZN Premier’s Cup, providing a first real test for their revamped lineup.
The head coach has already admitted that opening the season against the reigning champions is a massive challenge. Still, the club hopes that playing without pressure will allow their players to play freely and perhaps deliver one of the season’s first big upsets.
What’s the smart bet?
The gulf in class between these sides is significant. Orlando Pirates have kept their championship core, bolstered the squad with quality signings, and boast far greater squad depth. Milford are only just getting a taste of elite football, and debuting against the champions is a true baptism of fire. I’m backing the hosts to win with a -1.5 goal handicap.
