Ahmed Mostafa Zizo has admitted his controversial visit to the U.S. embassy last April was a major error that fueled speculation and tension during his final days at Zamalek.

Now a new Al Ahly player, the Egyptian winger reflected on the incident during an interview on "El Kora Ma'a Faik" on MBC Masr2.

“It was my biggest and only mistake,” Zizo says

Zizo revealed that the trip to the embassy—just a day before Zamalek’s CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal against Stellenbosch—was intended only as a precaution in case of transfer to a Club World Cup-bound team.

“Several clubs playing in the Club World Cup approached me since I was a free agent. I got the visa just in case. Even if I didn’t join one of them, I planned to attend the tournament as a spectator,” he said.

Tension, timing, and a fiery farewell

However, the timing could not have been worse. The winger admitted he regrets going through with the visit, saying, “It was just 24 hours before an important game. I regret the timing. That was my fault.”

The move to Al Ahly on a free transfer has since intensified the rivalry between the Red Devils and Zamalek, with fans of the latter blasting Zizo for perceived disloyalty.

His switch adds fresh heat to Egyptian football’s most iconic feud as both sides gear up for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Zizo, who left Zamalek as their sixth all-time top scorer, now has a new chapter to write—this time in red.
