Even though his side is at the bottom of Group C with just two points, Zimbabwe head coach Michael Nees is focused on the Warriors' difficult battle in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Despite the difficult road ahead, Nees, who led the squad to a victorious AFCON qualifying campaign, is optimistic about his side's prospects.

"We are not in a very good position, but there are still six games to play," said Nees in an interview with CAF Online. "We see this as a double project: improving our standing in the group and preparing for the AFCON finals."

Crucial games for Zimbabwe are scheduled for March, starting on March 17 at home against Benin. Soon after, the Warriors would also play Nigeria. Nees emphasized the might of these rivals, especially Nigeria, calling them a "wounded lion," alluding to their potential in spite of their rankings place.

Nees also expressed frustration over the team’s inability to play home games due to stadium issues, which has forced them to play abroad, adding logistical and financial challenges. Despite these obstacles, the coach remains determined to turn Zimbabwe’s fortunes around in both the World Cup qualifiers and the upcoming AFCON.

Nees is concerned with handling things "step by step" and making sure his players remain totally focused on the task at hand because the stakes are so high.
