Zamalek on Edge of Capital Cup Exit – Goalless Draw Leaves Peseiro’s Men Facing Miracle
Zamalek’s Capital Cup campaign hangs by a thread after a disappointing 0-0 draw with Modern Sport on Sunday at Cairo International Stadium. With just 2 points from 3 games, José Peseiro’s side now sit 4th in Group A, facing near-elimination.
Meanwhile, Modern Sport, coached by Algeria’s Abdelhak Benchikha, moved up to 4 points, behind Gouna on goal difference. Petrojet have already clinched the group with 12 points from 4 games.
What Zamalek Need to Qualify
Zamalek must beat Smouha by at least two goals in their final match on April 14, and hope Gouna and Modern Sport draw. In such a case, goal difference would determine who takes the second quarter-final spot.
Missed Chances Costly for Both Sides
Modern Sport started brighter, but Zamalek had the clearer chances—Mohamed Hamdy coming closest, only to be denied by keeper Ahmed Yehia. Despite late pressure, neither side could convert, with Ali Zezoua and Ahmed Ayman Mansour missing late chances for Modern.
Zamalek now face a must-win final game, but even that may not be enough to salvage their campaign.
