The decision comes after sporting director John Edward reportedly settled on a Portuguese profile, in coordination with club president Hussein Labib.

Paulo Bento has experience working under duress. The 54-year-old has led the Portuguese national side in the past, taking them to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012. One of his most recent positions was as coach of South Korea, who he led to the Round of 16 in Qatar in 2022.
