"You'll be England's top scorer." Harry Kane recalls Wayne Rooney's support before national team debut
England captain Harry Kane reminisced about his debut for the national team in 2015 and the pivotal support he received from then-captain Wayne Rooney. The young striker, nervous ahead of his first appearance, found Rooney’s encouragement invaluable, reports The Sun.
Kane made his England debut at the age of 21 during the Euro 2016 qualifiers. At the time, he was far from being the country’s all-time leading scorer, but Rooney had already seen his potential.
“II remember, when Wayne Rooney received an award for the greatest number of goals scored for England, he said he expected me to be the next.,” Kane shared.
Rooney’s belief in Kane paid off immediately, as the forward scored his first goal in his debut match against Lithuania. Since then, Kane has gone on to play 103 matches for England, scoring 69 goals and providing 19 assists, surpassing Rooney's record.
Currently playing for Bayern Munich, Kane has continued his prolific form this season, scoring 21 goals and providing 9 assists in 21 appearances. Bayern leads the Bundesliga, bringing Kane closer to realizing his dream of securing the first major trophy of his career.
