Yaya Touré Is 90 Minutes Away From Making History in the Champions League
Yaya Touré could achieve an unprecedented feat in the UEFA Champions League.
The Ivorian coach’s club, Slovan Bratislava, faces Celje this Wednesday evening at Stadion Z’dezele in Slovenia for the second leg of the final round of the 2026–2027 Champions League playoffs. After the first leg ended in a 1-1 draw in Slovakia, Slovan Bratislava is in Slovenia looking to secure its spot in the league phase.
If the Slovakian team manages to win in Slovenia, the former Ivorian international will become the first African head coach to lead a team to the Champions League league phase. This achievement would be a fitting reward for his strong start at the helm of the Slovak club’s coaching staff.
Since taking over as head coach of Slovan Bratislava this summer, Yaya Touré has maintained a perfect record. In the Slovak league, he has four wins in as many matches played. In the Champions League, his playoff run so far consists of three wins and two draws.
This impressive run puts the Ivorian coach on the verge of an unprecedented achievement for an African coach.
