Worls Athletics will pay prize money for medals at the Olympics
World Athletics has become the first sports federation in the world to introduce prize money for Olympic victories.
By doing so, World Athletics has made history as the first international federation to make such a decision. They will start awarding prize money starting from the 2024 Olympics.
The total prize fund will amount to $2.4 million, with each of the 48 gold medalists receiving $50,000.
"The introduction of prizes for Olympic gold medalists is a turning point for World Athletics and athletics as a whole, emphasizing our commitment to expanding athletes' opportunities and recognizing their critical role in the success of any Olympics," the federation stated.
The 2024 Olympics will take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11. Athletics competitions will commence on August 1 and continue until the end of the Games.
