Benfica and Argentina national team defender Nicolás Otamendi is expected to switch clubs this summer. According to ESPN, the experienced centre-back is close to returning home and could soon become a River Plate player.
According to the source, River Plate is aiming to finalize the deal after the World Cup. It is expected that Lionel Scaloni will include the seasoned defender in Argentina’s squad for the tournament.
For the record, the 38-year-old’s current contract with the Lisbon club runs until June 30, 2026. Upon its expiration, Otamendi will be able to leave Benfica as a free agent. The Argentine has been playing for the Portuguese giants since 2020. During that time, he has made 280 appearances, scored 18 goals, and provided 14 assists.
