Willian Reveals Bizarre Reason Why He Snubbed London Rivals to Join Chelsea in 2013
Chelsea legend Willian has revealed the surprising reason behind his dramatic decision to join the Blues instead of Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.
The Brazilian winger was on the verge of joining Tottenham after travelling to London to complete his medical ahead of a proposed move from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala. However, despite completing the required tests, Willian ultimately abandoned the deal and signed for Chelsea.
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast alongside Nigerian football legend John Obi Mikel and sports broadcaster Chris McHardy, Willian explained that Chelsea had always been his preferred destination.
"I went to London from Russia. My agent was talking to some clubs (Liverpool, Tottenham). At the moment, Chelsea was not sure; my heart was always to sign for Chelsea. On the day I was supposed to sign the contract after completing the medicals. I said to myself, 'I don't want to go there. I want Chelsea. Then my agent told me there was a problem. Chelsea made an offer, and I immediately said, 'Chelsea, an offer.' Then I said, 'Let go there.'
