Will the 2030 World Cup Feature 64 Teams? Uruguay Pushes for Expansion
The 2030 World Cup could be a game-changer in the history of football. Ignacio Alonso, president of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), confirmed that FIFA is considering expanding the tournament from 48 to 64 teams.
According to Bolavip, the initiative was proposed by the AUF itself as a way to commemorate the tournament's centenary. Alonso stated that he personally presented the idea to Gianni Infantino and other FIFA officials with the goal of making the 2030 edition a unique event.
“We have to give something different to this World Cup, something that won't be the same as 2026 or 2034,” he explained in an interview with El Espectador of Uruguay.
The 2030 World Cup is already set to be historic, being played across six countries: Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will host most of the tournament, while Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host the opening matches. With the potential expansion to 64 teams, the tournament would reach unprecedented dimensions, although the debate about its feasibility is just beginning.
