"Will not allow this to happen." Ceferin responds to Perez’s latest Super League comments
Despite its diminished media presence recently, the Super League project is still alive, and one of its initiators, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, recently described it as a revolution in European football. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin indirectly responded to Perez's remarks.
Details: Ceferin was a guest at a meeting of EU sports ministers, during which he emphasized the need to maintain unity in European football. He warned that if this unity were broken, smaller leagues and clubs would simply cease to exist.
Quote: "Do you remember how outraged people were when the selfish breakaway project threatened the European football model? In some sports, this has already happened, but we cannot and will not allow this to happen in European football. The connection between European and domestic competitions must be fully protected. Participation in domestic leagues should remain the sole criterion for qualifying for European competitions.
If that link is broken or somehow distorted, it will be a devastating betrayal of the domestic leagues — key elements of European heritage. For smaller football leagues and clubs, this is an existential issue," Ceferin said, according to UEFA’s press service.
Reminder: Earlier, U.S. senators criticized FIFA for its plans to award Saudi Arabia the right to host the 2034 World Cup.
