Why Santiago Giménez Chose Mexico Over Argentina Why Santiago Giménez Chose Mexico Over Argentina

Striker Santiago Giménez, one of Mexican football’s rising stars, could have played for Argentina. Born in Buenos Aires in 2001, he was contacted by Argentina’s U23 team in 2020, but chose to represent Mexico instead. His father, former player Christian “Chaco” Giménez, revealed the decision on the La Capitana podcast: “They called him from Argentina, but he chose Mexico. He’s lived there all his life, and he felt it that way.”

Chaco, who played for Boca and Independiente before representing Mexico, recalled the emotional moment he sang the national anthem at the Estadio Azteca: “That day, I felt Mexican.” His son has followed the same path, becoming a key player for El Tri.

Despite being a lifelong Boca Juniors fan, Santiago is focused on his European career and remains open to playing for his childhood club someday. His story highlights both Argentina’s proactive scouting efforts and the identity dilemmas faced by dual-national footballers.
