Whitecaps Plan New Stadium to Cement Future in Vancouver Whitecaps Plan New Stadium to Cement Future in Vancouver

The Vancouver Whitecaps are exploring the construction of a team-owned stadium at the PNE fairgrounds as part of a long-term plan to remain in Vancouver. Their current lease at B.C. Place expires at the end of 2025, prompting the MLS club to look for more control over operations and future stability.

This comes as the team’s ownership group prepares to sell the franchise, with CBC News reporting that a privately owned stadium could significantly increase the club’s market value. Currently, the Whitecaps rank 28th out of 29 MLS teams in valuation, partly due to their reliance on a publicly owned venue.

CEO Axel Schuster confirmed talks with city officials and B.C. Place operator PavCo, saying the goal is to secure a better setup — whether through a new stadium or an improved lease. The city acknowledged “high-level discussions,” but emphasized it’s still early in the process.

The proposed site carries historic significance. The Whitecaps played at nearby Empire Stadium in the 1970s and briefly returned to the area in 2011 at Empire Field during their first MLS season.

While some observers see the announcement as a strategic move to gain leverage in lease negotiations, others view it as a long-awaited step toward building a permanent home — one that could enhance scheduling, revenue, and fan engagement.
