Welterweight world champion Florian Marku arrested, faces up to 5 years in prison
Albanian boxer Florian Marku, reigning IBF International Welterweight Champion, has been arrested in Germany and extradited to Greece over a legal case stemming from an incident seven years ago in Thessaloniki, reports The Sun.
Marku is accused of causing bodily harm and illegally possessing a weapon during the incident. Despite serving 1.5 years in prison for the charges previously, the case was reopened upon appeal.
Greek law now requires him to serve at least one-third of his original sentence, potentially adding up to five more years in prison. However, Marku's family was informed that serving an additional six months might be sufficient to resolve the matter.
Florian Marku became the IBF International Welterweight Champion in 2021 after defeating Ukrainian Maxim Prodan in a title fight. His professional boxing record stands at 15 fights, with 13 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. This ongoing legal case, however, casts uncertainty over the future of his boxing career.
Before transitioning to boxing, Marku was a successful MMA fighter, showcasing his versatility and resilience in combat sports.
