Cape Verde president José Maria Neves made a bold statement ahead of the 2026 World Cup round of 16 clash against Argentina, declaring that his team has no intention of stepping onto the pitch just to survive.
Details: Cape Verde will face Argentina on July 4 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, and Neves has even predicted a 1-0 victory for his national side.
"We came to the World Cup to write our own destiny, to face the champions," Neves said when discussing the upcoming game against Argentina and Lionel Messi.
The president emphasized that the Cape Verde players would be fully committed: "They have 100% belief, 100% hope, and their shirts will be drenched with sweat."
At the same time, Neves recognizes the caliber of the opposition but refuses to let his team accept the role of underdogs in advance. According to him, Cape Verde will play to win regardless of Argentina's status.
"I believe Cape Verde can beat Argentina 1-0," the president added.
