‘We need to gain points’. Fonseca admits victory over Inter inspired Milan
The victory in the derby della Madonina over Inter was important for Milan, not only in terms of the tournament, but also emotionally. ‘The Rossoneri were able to rehabilitate themselves in front of their fans, and head coach Paulo Fonseca was able to put an end to rumours of his resignation.
Actually, the importance of the victory over Inter was recognised by Milan's head coach himself, but Fonseca overnight emphasised that the upcoming match against Lecce is just as important:
‘It's very, very important. We have to confirm that we are growing. Winning the derby makes more sense if we also beat Lecce, because we need to start picking up points. We have a lot of motivation to win tomorrow. For me it's a dangerous match after the derby, we have to be careful, we can't make mistakes. We have to win.
I don't want to go back to the derby, it's behind us. The mental part was more important than tactics and technique. These games are very emotional. It is important to be in good condition, balanced, motivated and energetic,’ Fonseca said at the press conference.
Actually, one of Milan's management advisers, Zlatan Ibrahimović, also spoke to the players about the importance of the game against Lecce the day before.
