Germany's head coach Julian Nagelsmann commented on the team's exit from the home Euro 2024 after their 2:1 defeat to Spain.

"Every player on the field and on the bench gave their all to win today. Now, we are all in pain.

I told my players that they didn't deserve this outcome, being knocked out of the tournament. We all miss our families, but no one wanted to go home. From the beginning of these one and a half months... the atmosphere in our team was excellent. We did everything we could to win this match.

My congratulations to the Spanish team. The first half was too open. In the second half, we improved and from the 60th minute onward, we were clearly the stronger side. We fully deserved the goal at the end of regular time. Unfortunately, we conceded the decisive goal when time was almost up. In that moment, we failed to apply the necessary pressure on the flank.

Kroos? It’s impossible to admire his career too much. I think he is a unique footballer for our country. Undoubtedly, one of the best in history. Everyone knows about his achievements, but not everyone knows what kind of person he is. When he was going through a very difficult time in his life, he openly discussed it with the team. He always sees himself as part of the group," the coach was quoted as saying by UEFA.

With their exit, the German team continued a sad tradition: it has been 40 years since host countries last won the Euros.
