Former Diamond League participant Kabange Mupopo has decided to drastically change her sport. The former track and field athlete will play for the Zambian football team at the Summer Olympics in Paris.
Kabange Mupopo won gold in the 400 meters at the 2015 All-Africa Games.
Mupopo made her debut in the IAAF Diamond League in Doha in May 2015, finishing seventh with a time of 51.88. In July 2015, she ran 50.86 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, improving her national record by a hundredth of a second. She was selected to compete at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing.
The Zambian also ran the 400 meters at the 2016 Olympics, finishing with a time of 51.76.
The Zambian women's team will play their first match at the Olympic Games today. The opponent of the African team will be the USA. The match begins at 21:00 Central European Time.
