War at the top! Čeferin prepares vote of no confidence against Infantino

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin is poised to lead a campaign for a vote of no confidence against FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Details: According to Ben Jacobs, the Slovenian is prepared to personally initiate the procedure, which requires the support of 43 FIFA members. Just recently, UEFA officially declared it had lost confidence in Infantino and threatened legal action, while the English and Welsh FAs have already withdrawn their backing for his re-election bid in March 2027.

The conflict reached boiling point after Infantino's disastrous plan to sell a stake in the World Cup to private investors for $20 billion collapsed, with UEFA threatening to boycott FIFA competitions. Meanwhile, the Swiss official is mired in a series of scandals: the Epstein investigation, allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate, the resignation of his closest advisor, and mounting calls from federations for him to step down. Publicly, only Donald Trump has remained in his corner.

Čeferin and Infantino have been at loggerheads for eight years: the Slovenian defeated the Super League initiative, slammed proposals for a biennial World Cup and the expansion to 64 teams. Now, he is closing in on his biggest victory yet: CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani is already being mentioned as Infantino’s likely replacement, with the FIFA presidential elections set for March 2027.
