Real Madrid have settled one of their most important long-term questions. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club has reached an agreement with Thibaut Courtois to extend his contract until 2028, ending any doubt about the future of the man between the posts.

Details: The new agreement will keep the Belgian at the Santiago Bernabéu until the summer of 2028, adding one season to his current deal, which was due to expire in June 2027. For a club that traditionally renews its veterans year by year and usually waits until the spring to decide, the move is a clear statement: Real Madrid's hierarchy have concluded that Courtois, 34, is still performing at an elite level and that no option on the market would clearly improve the position. The numbers back the judgment: in five appearances this season he has already made 16 saves and kept a clean sheet, and his seven saves in the 2-1 Champions League win over Inter Milan were decisive. José Mourinho has complete confidence in the goalkeeper and has publicly backed his importance, while the club have rejected approaches from clubs in financially stronger markets. Courtois, who joined from Chelsea in 2018 and has racked up more than 338 appearances, has repeatedly stated his wish to retire at the Bernabéu.

The renewal also reveals how the club views its succession planning. Rather than searching for an expensive replacement now, Madrid are betting that their academy pipeline will deliver in time: teenagers such as Javi Navarro, one of Spain's most promising keepers after his Youth League displays, are being tracked closely, along with Fran González at Sevilla. Andriy Lunin remains the ideal deputy, a reliable backup whose professionalism has never wavered even when confined to a secondary role. For Courtois himself, the extension buys another year to chase the records that matter to him: he has already won multiple Champions League and La Liga titles in Madrid and has long harboured the ambition of finishing his career at the club he joined as the world's most expensive goalkeeper.

It's worth noting that Courtois is currently taking a self-imposed break from international duty with Belgium and plans to return around this time next year for the Euro 2028 qualifiers. The agreement therefore secures his club future precisely at the moment his calendar has been cleared of national team commitments, a luxury he has rarely enjoyed during his career.
