WAFCON 2026: “The aim is to reach the semi-finals,” Reynald Pedros reaffirms Ivory Coast’s ambitions

The Ivorian women are determined to go as far as possible in the competition in order to secure their place at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.

The Ivory Coast women’s national team is aiming for a strong run at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which is taking place in Morocco. The Elephants, who made a successful start to their Group B campaign with a 4–1 win over Burkina Faso, are dreaming big. In an interview with L’Equipe, head coach Reynald Pedros revealed the Ivorian team’s ambitions.

“Firstly, to get out of this tightly contested group and reach the quarter-finals. We know this stage is always difficult, as was the case for Ghana in the 2024 edition, for example. But the aim is to reach the semi-finals to qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.”

The French tactician also discussed Ivory Coast’s clash with South Africa this Friday, 31 July, at the Medina Stadium. However, he acknowledged his opponents’ strengths.

“They’ll be a tough opponent, as they’re among the tournament favourites. They have technical quality, particularly in their passing. They’re a patient side, with a solid attacking game and plenty of movement.”
