WAFCON 2026: Super Falcons Lose to Cameroon and Miss Out on Automatic 2027 World Cup Qualification

Nigeria's Super Falcons have been knocked out of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon.

The decisive moment came in the 19th minute, when Nyadjou found the back of the net to give Cameroon the lead.

Nigeria pushed hard for an equaliser but struggled to break through a disciplined Cameroonian defence. Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina played a crucial role in the victory, making eight saves to keep the Super Falcons at bay.

The defeat is a major setback for Nigeria's hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.

Only the four teams that reach the WAFCON semi-finals earn automatic qualification for the World Cup through the African championship.

As a result, Nigeria will not qualify automatically via the WAFCON route and will now have to look to the alternative qualification pathway available to African teams.
